How to Add That “Wow Factor” to a Room When Building Your Dream Home

What makes a room more than just four plain walls and a ceiling?  Home décor can go a long way, but if you’re building your dream home, you likely want to get a little creative.  There are a few simple construction details you can add to the design to sprinkle some character and charm in your home.  Read on for a few of our favorite ideas to add that “wow factor” to your home design.

Coffered ceiling
This home in Oldsmar, Florida, featured coffered ceilings in the living room, kitchen, and other open living spaces. The ceilings were carefully designed and built by our millwork team to align with the overall design of the home.

  1. Coffered Ceilings.

One of the most striking ways to add visual interest to a room is by incorporating a coffered ceiling. These ornate and structured ceilings instantly draw the eye upward, creating a sense of magnificence. Coffered ceilings feature recessed panels or beams, which can be painted to match your room’s color scheme or left in their natural wood finish for added warmth and contrast. This design element not only adds depth to the room but also gives the room a timeless charm.

  1. Accent Walls.

Another effective way to bring depth and contrast to your room is through the use of accent walls. While neutral colors provide a clean canvas, darker shades can inject drama and intimacy into a space. Choose a wall that naturally draws attention, such as one with a fireplace or large window, and paint it a deep, rich color. This creates a striking focal point while maintaining a uniform design overall.

In this historic home we renovated in St. Petersburg, the walls of the guest bedroom were painted a dark, warm gray to create visual interest and drama.

  1. Unique Light Fixtures.

Lighting can make or break the ambiance of a room. Look for unique light fixtures that not only provide the illumination you want but also double as stunning works of art. Whether it’s a chandelier, pendant lights, or sculptural sconces, these fixtures can add a touch of luxury and personality to your space. The variety of light and shadows created by these fixtures can cast captivating patterns on walls and ceilings, further enhancing the room’s aesthetics.

Pendant lights and exposed beams in home
This home in Brandon, Florida, contained a number of unique design details, including reclaimed wood beams for the ceiling, as well as unique pendant lights and a chandelier to designate the separate spaces within the open floor plan.

  1. Wallpaper.

Wallpaper is making a comeback, but it’s far from the dated, floral patterns of yesteryear. Contemporary wallpaper designs offer an array of options, from geometric patterns to textured finishes. A well-placed wallpaper accentuates the room’s character and adds a layer of texture and interest. Consider using it on a single wall to create a focal point without overwhelming the entire space.

Don’t Overwhelm

While each of these design elements can really enhance your living spaces, remember that oftentimes less is more. Overloading a room with all these features simultaneously can lead to visual chaos. Instead, carefully select one or two elements that align with the overall design and atmosphere you want to create. The goal is to create an uniform look that elevates the room’s aesthetics without overwhelming it.

By choosing wisely and maintaining a sense of balance, you can add that “wow factor” to your dream home, making it a place that truly reflects your style and personality. So go ahead, embark on your home design journey, and turn your house into a home that leaves a lasting impression.
