Project:

Lighting Trends That Will Transform Your Home

cool light fixture
This custom home remodel we did in 2016 included a number of great light fixtures and task lighting.

Lighting can make or break your room’s atmosphere. Whether it is your living room, kitchen, bathroom or bedroom, the lighting is a very significant aspect of any room. Not only does the type of fixture and quality of the light count, there are other details to consider such as the direction or quality of the light.  Here are a few things to think of when planning the lighting in your custom home:

wine cellar Island Estates
This light fixture was perfect for the wine cellar of a custom home we created on Island Estates.

Light fixtures.  The fixtures themselves are a huge part of the room’s décor.  From the style to the finish, there are many things that contribute to the perfect fixture.  For instance, if you have an island in your kitchen, choose the right pendant lights to fit the style – whereas over the dining table you may place an elegant chandelier.  Sconce lights can be soft and elegant around a window or a fireplace, or around a bathroom mirror.

Under cabinet lighting
Under-cabinet and in-cabinet lighting was used in the kitchen of this custom home we built in Clearwater.

Finishes.  You can play around with the finishes of light fixtures and use them to really change the ambiance of a room.  Brass and rubbed bronze are really popular right now, although stainless steel is still as sleek and timeless as ever.  You may also consider doing something a little more outside the box, such as a red lantern-style fixture over an island or dining room table.  Splashes of color can add some great rhythm to an otherwise plain room.

Recessed Lighting.  Want to make a room feel more spacious?  Then recessed lighting is what you want.  Can lights can be placed strategically throughout the room and with the right kinds of bulbs and a dimmer, you can create a warm, cool, or natural light.  There are two parts to recessed lighting: the trims and the housings.  The trims are the parts you can see on the outside, and you can choose from a variety of styles and colors to fit the style of your room.

Under-Cabinet Lighting.  This is a great way to make your kitchen look more luxurious.  Under-cabinet lighting can be done in a variety of ways, including tape lights, which are flexible and save space; puck lights, which are great for accent lighting; and rope lights, which are great for under cabinets and toe kick areas.

LED Bulbs.  LED lights are becoming more and more popular as homeowners are starting to see the true benefits. Not only do they last longer, they don’t give off a tremendous amount of heat like the incandescent bulbs. Even though they are a bit costly right now, as they become more common the prices should drop. Paying a little bit more up front will help you in the long run since you won’t have to replace them as often and they are energy savers. Not to mention they come in a variety of shapes, colors, and brightness.

When it comes to choosing the lighting in your home, do put some thought into it as the lighting can change not only the look but also the feel you are trying to give the room.

This chandelier and the sconce lights are the perfect touch for the formal dining room of this historic home we restored and remodeled in Harbor Oaks.
