Project:

Is Beige the New Gray?

Beige Bathroom
The master bathroom of this whole home renovation we did on Island Estates has a beautiful, warm color palette.

In the world of home design, trends ebb and flow almost as fluidly as the fashion industry.  They may come and go and come back again, but they always return with a new vibe, as cultural changes ripple through homes, businesses, restaurants and cafes, bringing new inspiration to homeowners, designers, architects and contractors alike.  Recently the tides have begun to turn again, and – as controversial as it may seem – beige is making a comeback.  Don’t worry, this is not the old-fashioned obsession with shades of brown and orange.  Beige is returning with a subtle warmth and elegance that is giving the ever-popular gray palette some stiff competition.  Read on for some cutting edge advice on incorporating beige into your home design.

  1. Think Natural. 2018 has really shown us how important the environment is to homeowners, as trends reach toward natural materials such as wood and raw fibers like linen and flax.  Beige is the perfect color to enhance the natural materials in your home design such as wood beams, stained bead board ceilings, exposed rafters, and wood countertops.

  1. Contrast beige with black and white. For a crisp, modern look, use black and white to bring out the best of your beige – or vice versa.  A black-and-white kitchen with wood accents, earth-colored stoneware, and flax-hued linens is both luxurious and homey.

  1. If you love gray, get the best of both worlds by combining gray and beige. Whether it’s tile, flooring, backsplash, or paint, you can now find varying combinations of gray and beige in the form of warm grays (known as greige), marble with earth-toned veins, and mother-of-pearl tile with a beige sheen.  We recommend buying samples of the materials you plan to put in your home so that you can place them side-by-side and ensure they have a complementary tone.

  1. Select the shade you fall in love with. There are almost as many shades of beige as there are drops in the ocean – and you can even create your own.  Find the shade that makes you swoon, whether it’s flax, sand, camel, cafe au lait, buttermilk, oatmeal, vanilla or almond.

Regardless of how you use these earth tones, there is no denying that beige is in a league of its own.  We are delighted to see more and more homeowners leaning towards the elegant warmth of beige and hope to see even more in the years to come.
