Renovation Ideas for a Truly Modern Laundry Room

concrete countertopThe laundry room is almost always one of those make-do with what’s there, afterthought areas in the house that doesn’t really get thought about in terms of fantastic form and function. But think of how much time you spend in there, week in and week out, load after load…

If your laundry room is cluttered, with inadequate storage and a frustrating and inefficient layout, why not pull in some experts who can make it right? Imagine sleek custom cabinets and shelving for your storage needs and concrete countertops to cap it all off.

Consider Built-In Cabinets and Concrete Countertops

Having a clear idea ahead of time of just what you want for your laundry room will go a long way. You’re likely busy researching what kind of brand new, energy-efficient washer and dryer you’d like, but thinking beyond the appliances to the room as a whole will work best in the long run.

While you’re at it, never underestimate the benefits of excellently placed and well-designed task lighting in each part of your laundry room. Have some fun choosing fixtures that complement the overall feel of the space.

When It Comes to Modern Designs, Less Looks Best

Nothing screams modern more than clutter-free. But is that actually possible with a laundry room? Absolutely! Custom cabinets and shelves make small spaces bigger by providing additional storage, both overhead and at waist level; take advantage of every square inch. Cabinets can also be a great way to accommodate pullout ironing boards, along with the iron and spray or misting bottles. Simply flip the built-in board back into place when not needed.

Beautiful custom concrete countertops are seamless and waterproof, and also double as perfect folding areas. Have an attractive, waterproof floor covering, too. Large slate tiles are a classic, or have a look at some of the latest linoleum, which comes in designs and colors that will make you smile.

What Else does a Modern Laundry Room Have?

renovationA modern laundry room looks streamlined and screams efficiency and an excellent use of space. It has practical and efficient solutions for every task, without looking like something unfinished from a factory floor. Here are just a few more practical features:

  • An ultra-roomy, double stainless steel sink will allow you to wash any truly delicate items by hand. And if you need to dye fabric of any kind, it’s the ideal set-up (think kids and tie-dye t-shirt projects!).
  • Definitely have a handy retractable spray handle wand right by the sink; it’ll be indispensable in more ways than you can imagine.
  • If you have pets, especially dogs of the larger variety, why not include a dedicated spot for shampooing and rinsing pooch right in your laundry room? Consider the ease of using a comfortable, mess-free dog-wash? Don’t strain your back leaning into the bathtub while Fido splashes soapy water all over the floor and beyond. There are some innovative designs available for these self-contained, purpose-built units, and the laundry room is the perfect spot.
  • A retractable clothesline and/or drying racks to accommodate drip-dry clothing that don’t belong in the dryer.

Hey, no one ever said laundry would become your very favorite chore, but the right surroundings and conveniences make it much less of a drag! You might even get the teenagers in on the act. Hey, why not aim high.
