Bathroom remodeling can be a fun and exciting project, but even with experienced home building specialists at the helm, be prepared to make firm decisions about your preferences for the basic elements of design, materials and the final trimmings, including a good-looking mirror that suits the dimensions of the space. Before you get overwhelmed, read on for a great method to help you narrow it down.
There are many mirror manufacturers out there and plenty of options to choose from. One of the most important aspects of selecting the right bathroom mirror, however, is size. With a few simple measurements, it’s easy to determine a mirror’s suitability for a given space.
Bathroom Remodeling: Picking a Marvelous Mirror
When browsing for mirrors, decide whether you prefer a smooth or more textured metal finish, such as polished or brushed chrome, nickel or brass. Maybe wood is your thing, or even no frame at all. Be sure to complement the new bathroom’s overall décor, including wall color, tiles, lighting scheme and various accents and accessories.
In an all-white bathroom, for example, a polished chrome mirror frame highlights a clean, contemporary look, bouncing light from the walls to create the illusion of a larger space. Warmer, earthy bathroom tones might work better with a richly stained wood mirror frame, or even a wicker trim.
Sizing up the Mirrors
- When shopping for mirrors, note the dimensions provided in the product description or measure the mirror from top to bottom for height and width. Typical shapes include rectangular, round and oval, so definitely go with what pleases your eye.
- Determine the size of your finished bathroom to help decide which mirror shape and size works best for its general proportions.
- Always choose a mirror in relation to the countertop or vanity where it will be used. As a good guideline, including its outer frame, a mirror should measure a few inches less than the area of the vanity and sink it sits above.
- Standard mirror sizes include 24, 30 and 36 inches, with a 30-inch mirror measuring 30 inches in height (width may vary depending on the shape) and a 36-inch mirror measuring 36 inches in height. For a medium vanity, select a 24-inch mirror (approx. 24 x 20 inches).
You Can See Clearly Now…!
Ask your bathroom remodeling specialist to point you in the direction of mirror manufacturers or outlets that they most strongly recommend for selection and good quality. Yes, choosing the right bathroom mirror is largely about proportion, but it’s also about “reflecting” your personal taste and style!
