Let’s face it: the number one complaint about bathroom countertops is probably their limited space. Not to mention the fact that bathrooms are usually shared by two or more people, and some have more personal products than others: make-up, hand mirrors, lotions and potions galore … add a soap dish or dispenser, a box of tissues, a shaving kit and some extra hand towels, and before you know it, there isn’t much room to spare.

If this sounds all too familiar, then it’s especially important to figure out how to maximize the space on your bathroom countertops. Here are some helpful tips to get you started:

Make More Space on Bathroom Countertops

1. 1. Invest in a medicine chest – If your priority is to keep bathroom countertops less cluttered, make sure that you have alternative spaces to place your bath and beauty products. A great looking medicine chest or other cabinet that you can attach or mount to the wall can really help take up the slack, even for the most hardcore product junkies. Plus having a door to click neatly shut keeps less attractive or more personal items out of sight, giving the whole bathroom a less chaotic feel.
   2. Build down – Another tactic to try, especially if you have the luxury of designing your own bathroom with a company experienced in creating and installing great bathroom countertops, is to place more storage down below. Instead of having freestanding pedestal sinks, consult with your bathroom renovation specialist and have them install sinks into built-in cabinets or a snazzy looking vanity that really complements the look and feel of your bathroom countertops.
   3. Try stackable containers – If there’s really no other place to put hygiene and other bathroom products but on the countertop, then you might want to consider some stackable containers. When it comes to items on bathroom countertops, contained is definitely better than scattered. There are lots of truly attractive designs in compact stackable containers available that can enhance the room’s décor while still being functional. Practicality counts.

1. Sacrifice a sink – This tip goes out to those couples who insist on having separate sinks. If your priority is to have more countertop space, then you may manage very well with a single sink to share between the two of you. It’s undeniable that sinks really do take up precious countertop space. If you insist on having double sinks, make sure that your bathroom is large enough to comfortably accommodate them.
2. Purge your products – Do you honestly need three kinds of hand soap? Take the opportunity to really think about what you use on a regular basis, and get rid of any outdated medications or other products that have strayed into the stale category. Maybe now’s the time to deep-six that frizz-free hair gel that never really worked, anyway! If you want to save and maximize space, then you will have to limit the amount of products you have. Toss the ones that didn’t work for you, or those that you don’t use anymore.
