It’s a bit strange that a bathroom can become such center piece in a home. It’s supposed to be the most private of rooms and yet when it comes to showing off a house for sale it is one of the spaces people are most interested in seeing.

Far more design hours go into making the bathroom look good than the bedroom, or even the living room!

So let’s face it, for whatever reason when you remodel your home you are going to want a bathroom that looks great and, more important, functions well.

Start by Choosing your Bathroom Design

• Probably the best way to get started is to get a specific style in mind. You may already have a style in your home and want the bathroom to fit in with that style. Or you need some ideas you can start perusing the renovation magazines for some ideas that jump out at you.

• Once you have an idea for a style you need to look at what you can realistically achieve. This includes looking at both the size of the space available and the size of the budget you have for the job.

• Now the next thing is to work out the design with your contractor. A good contractor can help you with the design plans and a really good contractor will have home design services so you can actually sit down and do a full consultation of what can be done and what will work.

I must confess that I love a good bathroom design. There are so many elements that go into a bathroom that you have a huge range of design choices, from a rustic country theme to a modern steel and glass design.

A good designer can take the style and design ideas you have in mind and make it work in the space available.

Functionality of a Bathroom Remodel

Now comes the dirty stuff, that’s where you need a contractor who knows how to build a bathroom right. A bathroom doesn’t just have to look great, it actually has to work. Anyone can splash a coat of paint on a wall and make a room look brand new but a bathroom requires some serious skill.

Do you want to change the location of the bath and toilet? Do you need to install a drain? Does the floor slope properly? Do you have moisture trapped between the wall and the tiles?

It’s no joke getting this stuff right. Improper moisture control can lead to mold growth which could mean you have to do the whole thing over again – not to mention the health risks. In addition to mold growth, dry-rot issues can occur.

Don’t try to cut corners when it comes to your bathroom contractor, spending a little more for quality work really pays off in the long run.

So when you find that combination of a dependable contractor with a solid in-house design team you can make that bathroom the center piece that it, however strangely, was meant to be.
